Lost Property

What happens when lost items are found on the tram, buses or around the island?

RIOC's Public Safety Department (PSD) documents all lost property cases when a person reports their property lost, and everyone on the island is directed to turn in lost items to PSD at 550 Main Street, Roosevelt Island NY 10044.

How long does PSD hold onto lost items?

When PSD comes into possession of lost property, they attempt to locate the owner, and if no owner can be located, they inventory and store the property, sometimes for years. By comparison, the NYPD's policy is to dispose of lost or unclaimed property after 90 days.

What should I do if I lost property on Roosevelt Island?

Individuals who lose an item should file a report with PSD. If someone has already turned in your lost item they will immediately return it.

If I want a copy of the lost property report I file with PSD, how do I go about obtaining it?

In order to obtain a lost property report, you must file a FOIL request. PSD advises people to file FOILs online using our website. Under the FOIL law, requests must be made in writing.
